It's already more than two weeks, that we had to leave Riverbend.

We'd like to thank you again for the two days we've spent in this beautiful
place.
The whole S.A. honey-moon-trip was perfect, but these two days were the
highlight for sure.
You were so nice and warm-hearted and you were looking that everything was
perfect - and all the surprises.

We hope that everything is fine at Riverbend.
After back one week in Switzerland, the daily-routine begins to start. But
we do think of Riverbend a lot...

Of course the accommodation and food were terrific, but it was the game drives and in our particular case the knowledge and enthusiasm of Wesley that made it so special for us. Dear All at Riverbend!
 
I just wanted to email to say what a totally awesome time we had at Riverbend last week.
It really was the highlight of our first ever trip to South Africa..and first time on Safari for our 2 children.
It is such a beautiful place...with the perfect blend of luxury and total authenticity.
Not to forget the actual drives of course! Wes was such a perfect guide...cant have been easy with ages 10 to 76 to keep happy at all times!!
The black rhino and her calf were such a find and all down to Wes's patience and expertise...we could'nt believe our eyes when we watched the huge cactus being pushed to the ground and then the rhino's running out after!
 
The outdoor shower was also a real favourite of ours...what a lovely experience to shower in the warmth with a fab view and the odd cheeky monkey taking a peek!!
 
Anyway..best get back to shovelling snow here in Edinburgh...had to dig the car out this morning!!
 
Please send our best wishes to everyone and thank you again for such a wonderful stay at Riverbend Lodge!

We stayed at Riverbend Lodge in late May 2009. What a beautiful place with great staff and knowledgeable guides.

We picked Riverbend because it specifically catered for young children and they did. Darlington, our guide kept them enthralled for a full days game drive which we are unable to do on an hours car journey at home!

The staff were very accommodating in how and when meal times were taken and especially how the game drives were organised. For example the wind was too strong one morning so they re-arranged the whole day and provided us with a picnic lunch so that we could go out later that morning for the whole day.

The children (Aged 6 and 4) were allowed to have the run of the place and especially enjoyed the play ground area and the swings. All the staff were full of smiles and our daughters really loved having Princess serving them breakfast each morning (her real name - which they couldn't believe).

The food is magnificant and the kitchen staff were very accommodating in making food to order for the children.

Riverbend allows you to enjoy the African experience in comfort and style. It is very colonial in appearance but I loved that. Sitting on an old fashioned veranda overlooking the watering hole where the elephants and zebra came to drink was my idea of extreme relaxation!

Of course the African experience is made by your guides and Darlington was so enthusiastic that it was infectious. The kids were fascinated and can still name all the animals they saw on each drive.

I would have no hesitation recommending this to everyone but it was especially pleasing that a place professing to be child friendly (a) actually was and (b) went above and beyond the call of duty in relation to making the children have a truly memorable experience.

Wow! Wow! Wow! What an amazing way to start our honeymoon!  Not only is RiverBend a beautiful reserve, but the staff make you feel like a long-lost friend.  We had such a lovely, relaxing time (for the second time) and you can be sure that we’ll be back next year.  Sam’s cooking is by far the best we’ve had, and his politeness and friendly smile are very welcome.  Thanks Chris too, for showing us some incredible views – I especially loved seeing the aloes and cycads!  And getting up so close to the elephants was a once-in-a-lifetime experience.  Thank you all!

"RiverBend Lodge deserves every one of its five TGCSA stars and must surely give the better known Private Game Lodges of Kruger pause for thought. If 'personal' describes best what you truly value when considering your choice of Bushveld experience, RiverBend will not disappoint. The service is stellar, from a team whose casual ability to delight the guest is almost unnerving. The Lodge is unashamedly Colonial, our honeymoon suite tastefully furnished and finished, with subtle reminders of the African bush provided by beautifully sketched pictures of local fauna.

An early morning wake up call and a welcome coffee from our personal guide preceded a three hour morning game drive, followed by breakfast served on the Lodge veranda overlooking a waterhole, where we recalled morning sights of elephant, lion, rhino and zebra within RiverBend's Nyati Concession and the surrounding Addo Park. After a leisurely a'la carte lunch, viewings took place again mid afternoon, visiting RiverBend's private Intsomi Reserve, where we spotted giraffe, sable and bontebok, species not seen in the Addo according to our guide Darlington, whose passion and love for the Bushveld proved both informative and infectious and (I'm glad to say) spilled over into his generously mixed G&T's, which were enjoyed as we watched the sun set slowly behind undulating hills of acacia.

Gastronomes will be rather pleased with themselves at the Lodge. Chef Christopher Whitham's seven-course dinner menu displays a technical ability and balance of african-mediterranean fusion that is quite simply breathtaking and certainly shouldn't be evident in someone of his early years. Believe me, his is some of the best food to be had in SA. Together with a wine list that champions all that is good about the great South African secret, we found ourselves back on our veranda, silly grinned and satiated, gazing up at a Milky Way that stretched out through a spectacular glittering blanket of African night sky. It really doesn't get much better than this."

An accomplished team manages to apparently effortlessly cater for their guests' every need. Not only is the accommodation luxurious and the food a culinary masterpiece but their enthusiasm and knowledge of Addo National Park spills over. The game drives, with knowledgeable guides in high open vehicles,were both fun and informative. We were lucky enough to be there during a wet spell and we saw, through both their eyes and our own, the arid terrain come to life. During four days we saw 21 species of mammal, including lion, elephant, rhino and buffalo, countless birds and lots of bottles of nice wine. A special experience to which we hope to return. Long Hope Villa is amazing.  Food & hospitality top rate; Sam – you are a very talented chef.  To Chris, thanks for all our drives, where we saw so much, incl. lion, buffalo & elephants.  Not to forget the eland, hartebeest, ostrich, warthog, tortoise, monkeys, bat-ear foxes, zebra, reedbuck, waterbuck, baboons, and all the beautiful birds, like sunbird, herons, an many more!  It has been a truly fantastic experience, and one that we hope to repeat.  The children will have their memories and their diaries to repeat the experience when we are home in the cold an rain!!  Again, a huge thank you for a magical time!

As I sat watching the elephants at the waterhole, I dreaded leaving it all behind, as this was supposed to be my dream trip of a lifetime, but then I realised that I could come back, so that is what I intend to do.  It will make the cold of England bearable, to plan to return to Africa , and Riverbend.

Thanks Charl for the perfect game drives having seen rhinos, giraffes and so many other animals, especially for the elephant adventure!  Sam’s cooking was excellent and the meals lovely arranged.  Belinda and Lindiwe, thank you for all your efforts and your hospitality.  It has been great!
